Kukkude and Honnala

Kukkude is one of the many delta regions around coastal town Udupi. Honnala is another coastal village adjacent to Kukkude. Both are just 2.5 km away from each other.

When searching for a getaway, we are usually bombarded with the sites and videos suggesting the famous locations around you. In the process of planning, we often forget to look around us and appreciate the beauty of our native land. We, too, are not an exception in this regard. Hailing from a coastal place like Udupi offers a new place to explore every here and there. Only difference being we don’t see the place from a ‘tourist’ perspective and often fail to stop and enjoy the surroundings. In the attempt of breaking such stereotype we decided to explore around our home and this small interesting circuit is the first outcome of that attempt.

Kukkude

We started early in the morning to avoid the heat. Only mornings are bearable in coastal regions. We chose a two-wheeler for its flexibility and for the few rides we planned in this short series, which can be done only thorough a two-wheeler. We reached Kukkude by riding through the familiar stretches of Salikeri and then took the help of Google Maps after taking left at Honnala Doopadakatte road. Not only that, but we shortlisted a particular point near Shri Rama bhajana mandira of Kukkude just by analyzing the map and found a road which reaches till the shore of Madisalu river. Remember we talked about this river in our post on Aroor and also on Heroor hanging bridge? Now we are almost at a place where it will join the Arabian Sea barely after 1 km. Road till Shrirama bhajana mandira is well paved. There is enough parking space near the school present adjacent to the mandir. We took our scooter till the shoreside.

View from this place is so soothing it makes perfect place to relax and enjoy the nature during early morning and late evening. One can sit on the rock formation on the shore and just gaze the calm river flowing between small islands called ‘Kudru’s in Local Kannada language. We spent some time in silence, took some photos and rode towards over next destination Honnala.

Honnala

Honnala is yet another tiny coastal village. The road to reach the shore point traverses through the blissful coconut plantation. One can enjoy the day-to-day activities of village folks around. Just like Kukkude there is no specific dedicated parking location. The road ends where the land ends and river shore starts. We just parked our scooter at the end of the road and walked along the coconut plantation, which is private property. But thanks to the owner, nobody stopped us from enjoying the view.

We settled at the edge of the plantation for some time to enjoy the fishermen boats sailing for their daily chores, listening to the mild waves of river waves hitting the shore. We saw boathouses of delta beach in the distance. Hangarakatte ferry point is also visible from here. Our next destinations being these two, we quickly left from Honnala and proceeded towards Hangarakatte.
