Planning

Here’s the rephrased version:

We wanted to hit Top Station before the weekend crowd took over, so we kept the morning tight, quick breakfast at Saravana Bhavan in Munnar town and straight on the road. The route to Top Station passes through some well-known spots like Kundala Dam, Echo Point, Photo Point, and Mattupetty Dam, but we gave all of them a skip for now. Top Station was the only thing on our mind that day, and we weren’t going to let anything slow us down getting there.

Best route

We rolled out of Gokulam Homestay at 7.05 AM, made a quick stop at the beautiful Chitirapuram Viewpoint on the way, and reached Hotel Saravana Bhavan in Munnar town by 7.45 AM. After breakfast, we hit the road towards Top Station. It is 34km on paper, but the narrow winding ghat roads cutting through endless tea estates stretch that to a good one hour. Add a few photo stops along the way and we happily doubled that time. By the time we pulled into the Top Station parking, it was almost 10 AM and every extra minute spent on that drive was completely justified.

About Place

Standing at Top Station, you instantly understand why it holds a special place among the best viewpoints in Munnar. Misty valleys, sprawling tea estates, and the rolling hills stretching into Tamil Nadu all come together into one sweeping panorama that you just cannot stop staring at. On a clear day, the bird’s-eye view of the valley below with the Western Ghats as a dramatic green backdrop is something your camera will struggle to do justice to. And honestly, the journey is half the experience. The drive to Top Station winds through some of the most scenic roads in South India, passing tea plantations, spice gardens, and fog-wrapped hillsides that make every bend in the road a photo opportunity.

More About Place

Ever wondered how Top Station got its name? It goes back to 1902, when this spot served as the uppermost station of the Kundala Valley Railway – quite literally the top of the line. Back then, tea harvested from the famous Kannan Devan Hill Tea Plantations would make its way down 5 km via the Kottagudi Aerial Ropeway to Kurangani in Tamil Nadu, and from there, all the way to England. What started as a monorail goods carriage route was later upgraded to a gauge railway in 1908, making it one of the most remarkable engineering efforts of colonial-era Kerala. A catastrophic flood in 1924 brought it all to an end, and today, all that remains are the quiet ruins of the old ropeway station, a forgotten piece of Munnar’s history sitting right beside one of Kerala’s most visited viewpoints.
